Swimming with Our Buddy Class Room 6

Yesterday our buddy class came with us to the pool. At the pool we played some games like leapfrog, piggy back races and human cannonball. We felt like we were flying through the air when we did the human cannonball. It was awesome!

My Holiday by Emily Emmett

The Birds in my Roof

In the holidays we heard a tweeting in the roof. Then my uncle cut a hole in our roof and he also put his hand in there and grabbed the baby birds. We made a nest for the baby birds. We made a house for the baby birds. I fed them at night and day. I also put them in the hot water cupboard at night. One lived and flew away and the other one didn't because it got bitten by a dog.

Room 2's Treaty & Selfies & Planting Our Garden

We brainstormed our treaty which is our class rules. We then signed our treaty to show that we will all do it. We learnt that the Treaty of Waitangi is about working as a team.

We have been working on our selfies and it has been fun! To make our phones we had to take a photo of ourselves (except that we got a buddy to do it!) and we coloured in the phones. It only took us two days to make them.

Today we had to plant some new plants in our barrel! Mrs Simpson helped us.

Letter to Parents

30/1/2017

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

How exciting! A new school and a whole bunch of new opportunities to explore and people to get to know. Welcome to 2017 in Room 2! It is a pleasure and privilege to be working alongside you and your children this year.

To introduce myself a little bit … I am Kylie Olynsma and am new to Halcombe School this year. My husband Blair and I moved into the Halcombe area about a year ago and were blown away by the friendly neighbourhood.  We live on a lifestyle block with our three dogs, two horses and two cows and simply love it. I am originally from Gisborne and Blair is Manawatu born and bred. Previously I was working in Palmerston North at Central Normal School. Prior to that I have taught in Christchurch (yes, we were there for the quakes … what a life changing experience) and Auckland.

As Year 2’s and 3’s a big focus this year is on growing our children to be independent. You can help with this by encouraging them to pack their own bags, carry their bag into school and unpack what they need to, come into class and sort their belongings on their own, greet me each morning and make a choice as to what they will play until bell time. Help them to be proud of the things that they can achieve independently!

We have the Life Education bus coming soon, so the first few weeks of Inquiry will be thinking about friendships and how we manage these. Later in the term we move into Science and the Living World where we will be taking a look at Birds and answering the question “How can we help our endemic & native birds and why do we need to?” So, if any of you out there are bird experts and would be willing to come in and share your knowledge with the class please get in touch!

Please make sure you pop in to introduce yourself sometime soon. If you would like to discuss your child’s progress at any stage make a time with me and I’m happy to chat.

I’m looking forward to getting to know you all this year and helping your children on their learning journey.

Yours truly,

Kylie Olynsma
